A helium-neon laser is a gas laser, and it's gain medium consists of a mixture of 25% neon and 75% helium with a total pressure of about 1mm of mercury inside a small electrical discharge. The He-Ne laser plasma tube consists of a laser bore tube inside a glass envelope. The capillary tube is designed so that the electrical discharge is directed through its small-bore to produce high current densities in the gas.

The high reflector is located at the anode end of the tube while the output coupler is at the cathode end. Manufacturers attach the mirrors directly to the capillary tube ends to make laser tubes durable and cost-effective. This technique is common with small, low power lasers. In case of high power tubes or when optically polarised output is desired, the tube ends are cut at a particular angle and are sealed with glass panes called Brewster windows. After this is done, the mirrors are mounted on mechanical stable but adjustable mounts which allows the operator to align these mirror surfaces parallel to each other but perpendicular to the capillary tube axis.

A gas reservoir is usually present in all He-Ne plasma tubes. This reservoir helps in maintaining a uniform pressure for a long time and provides excess gas to replace the gas that may escape through the seals or the tube.

 

The light in the He-Ne laser is produced by atomic transitions with the neon atom. The helium acts as a buffer gas which is to help the atoms of other gas to produce laser in the same manner. When the He-Ne mixture is applied with the energy from the pumping source, some of the energy is absorbed by the He atoms i.e. the atoms achieved an excitation state. When the helium atom traverses within the laser tube, they collide with the neon atoms. With each collision, some of the energy is transferred to the neon atom thus getting it to a meta-stable state.

 

The He-Ne laser has the following applications:
