Agrobacterium tumefaciens, also known as Rhizobium radiator, is a specialized form of naturally occurring soil bacteria capable of transferring T-DNA to plant cells. T-DNA, known as transmitted DNA, is located in the Ti plasmid and can be integrated into the host plant's chromosomal DNA. It is extensively utilized in genetic engineering and plant biotechnology. To enhance this capability for laboratory applications, scientists have developed Agrobacterium tumefaciens strains with heightened competency, creating what are known as competent cells. These cells are engineered to be highly receptive to foreign genetic material, making them effective vectors for introducing desired traits or genes into plants. Utilizing Agrobacterium tumefaciens competent cells in genetic modification begins with preparing the cells, ensuring they are primed for accepting foreign DNA. This involves specific treatment methods that render the cells more receptive to genetic material. Once the T-DNA is inside the plant cells, it integrates into its genome. The foreign genes are expressed in the transformed plant on the successful transfer, manifesting the desired trait.
