Air abrasion, also known as microabrasion, is a method for removing tooth decay with tiny particles of aluminum oxide or silica. Abrasion is a dental technology used as an alternative to a traditional dental drill for removing decay and tooth preparation for fillings without the need for anesthetics. The abrasive particles strike the tooth with high velocity and remove small portions of the tooth structure. The efficiency of removal depends on factors such as the hardness of the tissue being removed and the operational parameters of the air abrasion device.
