Overview

An airway catheter, also known as an endotracheal tube, is a device used to maintain an open airway in a patient who cannot breathe adequately on their own. Endotracheal tubes are elastic tubes made from different materials, such as PVC (polyvinyl chloride), silicone, or rubber. They are inserted through the mouth or nose and passed down the throat into the trachea (windpipe). An endotracheal tube is often used during surgery procedures and in emergencies. Positioning the tube within the trachea is called endotracheal intubation. These endotracheal tubes have one or two channels called lumens. A double-lumen endotracheal tube is used when it is necessary to ventilate each lung separately, such as with specific lung or chest surgeries.

Airway Catheters encompass various types, including nasopharyngeal airway catheters, oropharyngeal airway catheters, and others. Oropharyngeal airway catheters, also known as Guedel airways, are solid intraoral devices that conform to the tongue and displace it from the posterior pharyngeal wall, restoring pharyngeal airway patency. An oropharyngeal airway is a curved plastic tube with a flange at one end designed to be positioned between the tongue and the hard palate to relieve soft palate obstruction. An oropharyngeal airway has four parts: the flange, the body, the tip, and a channel to allow for the passage of air and suction. Oropharyngeal airways come in various sizes (e.g., 40 mm to 110 mm). Choosing an appropriate oropharyngeal size is determined on an individual basis through the use of anatomical landmarks. When determining the proper oropharyngeal size for a patient, one must assess where the oropharyngeal airway parts lie with the patient’s anatomical landmarks. The flange should be approximated externally to where it is abutting the lips, and the tip should be able to reach the angle of the mandible. Insertion of an oropharyngeal airway is not complicated but must be done with care to avoid further worsening of the airway obstruction and injuries to the airway.

Recent Developments in 3D Printing Medical Device Market:

  • In July 2022, SunMed Holdings (US) announced a strategic partnership with Securisyn Medical LLS (US) to improve ventilated patient safety and broader smooth tube and catheter security.

  • In March 2022, Dynarex Corporation expanded its DME line to meet home-care and long-term care market demands, offering premium solutions like Long Term Care Beds, Mattresses, Lifts, Wheelchairs, and Mobility. Emphasizing patient safety and comfort, the company prioritizes quality and trust.

The increasing prevalence of respiratory conditions such as COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), asthma, and various other disorders is a significant driver for the growing demand in the airway catheters market. As these conditions become more widespread, the need for more effective airway management solutions becomes necessary. Airway catheters play a crucial role in providing appropriate ventilation and maintaining airway patency in patients with compromised respiratory function, making them essential tools in treating and caring for individuals suffering from these conditions. This growing demand is anticipated to boost market growth, particularly in healthcare settings where respiratory diseases are prevalent. Moreover, increasing surgical procedures, particularly within critical care environments and emergency rooms, is expected to drive the market expansion over the forecast period. These devices are important in preserving airway integrity during anesthesia administration and ventilation support, ensuring optimal oxygenation and ventilation for patients undergoing various medical treatments. In critical care settings, where patients may face acute respiratory challenges, airway catheters are essential for healthcare providers to ensure proper airflow and facilitate successful surgical results. However, the stringent regulatory guidelines managing the medical devices industry, including airway catheters, significantly restrain the market growth. Complying with these strict policies demands significant resources, expertise, and time, potentially causing increased production costs. Manufacturers must invest in comprehensive testing, quality control measures, and documentation to ensure safety and security standards adherence. This might be particularly challenging for smaller or newer entrants in the market, potentially limiting their ability to compete effectively further hindering the market growth during the projection period.
