Overview

According to FutureWise analysis the market for analgesics in 2023 is US$ 32.54 billion, and is expected to reach US$ 55.17 billion by 2031 at a CAGR of 6.80%.

Analgesics are drugs capable of relieving pain but not causing loss of consciousness. Paracetamol and nonsteroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are a significant group of analgesics capable of producing analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. Anti-inflammatory analgesics reduce inflammation, and opioid analgesics change how the brain perceives despair. Many types of analgesics are available, from pills and liquids to gels and patches you apply to your body. Some analgesics can be purchased over the counter, and others are available by prescription only. The mechanism action of these drugs is on the central nervous system. They are apt to inhibit cyclooxygenases and thereby decrease the production of prostaglandin.

Many anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs share similar side effects. Hypersensitivity responses to aspirin-like medications are thought to arise due to an accumulation of prostaglandins after the pathways break down prostaglandins are blocked. These responses can be destructive when strong anti-inflammatory compounds are administered. Inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis can lead to other serious side effects, such as the development of peptic ulcers and reduced ability of platelets in the blood to aggregate and form clots. The latter effect, however, has given aspirin an added use as a prophylactic antithrombotic drug to reduce chances of cardiac or cerebral vascular thrombosis, the formation of a lump in a blood vessel in the heart or brain. Some aspirin-like analgesics also have specific toxic effects like liver damage occasionally after administering acetaminophen, and renal toxicity is sometimes seen with NSAIDs. Aspirin, taken in overdose, can cause deafness, ear ringing, diarrhea, nausea, and headache, which disappear when the dose is reduced or discontinued.

Recent Developments in Analgesics Market:

  • In January 2021-Pfizer partnered with Premier, an American healthcare improvement company. Following this cooperation, the companies would offer five essential medications to healthcare practitioners to help them fulfill the immediate and long-term demands for necessary medications necessary for a range of patient care interventions.

  • In June 2021-Bayer developed its business in India by establishing its Consumer Health division.

Increased incidence of chronic diseases, such as tuberculosis (TB), cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and arthritis, is expected to drive the analgesics market growth. In addition, patients have a substantial rise due to infectious diseases such as gastrointestinal, respiratory, and neurology. The increase in these diseases, in turn, increases the demand for painkillers, which is foreseen to drive the analgesics market share further. Moreover, an increase in funding from private & government organizations for the development of pharmaceutical manufacturing segments and a rise in R&D activities for the advancement of analgesic products surge the growth of the analgesics industry. Furthermore, strategic collaborations and advancement in medical drug development creates new opportunity in analgesics growth market. Producers purchase smaller businesses in leading analgesic medicine to acquire a competitive advantage and strengthen their market position. These purchases aid organizations in boosting regionally and gaining technological expertise in new product research and development. For example, WCG purchased Analgesic Solutions, LLC in 2019. WCG seeks to grow and position itself as a market leader in the analgesic sector by leveraging Analgesic Solutions, LLC's outstanding R&D expertise. This will further create new market opportunities during the forecast period of 2022-2029. Therefore, the increasing use of biologics for treating inflammatory and neuropathic pain obstructs the growth of the analgesics market. Biologics are drugs produced from living organisms, including several components derived from humans, animals, or microorganisms. These drugs may contain proteins, modified human hormones, or cells that produce substances that suppress or activate parts of the immune system. Biologics can provide greater efficacy than analgesics, which provide effective pain relief and are thus widely used nowadays. For example, the FDA approved Pfizer and Lilly for developing Tanezumab, a biologics medicine.
