Cell lysis is caused by the weakening and destabilization of bacterial cell walls.
It is resistant to hydrolysis with beta-lactamase and has activity against both Gram-positive and Gram negative bacteria. There have been reports of E.coli strains that are resistant to ceftiofur. Desfurolyceftiofur, a metabolite of ceftiofur, also has antibiotic activity. Therefore, the two compounds are combined to measure antibiotic activity in milk.
