Overview

Organ Preservation Market is poised to value over USD 300 million by 2028 end at a CAGR of over 6.3% during the forecast period 2022 to 2028.

Organ preservation is the ability to preserve ex vivo organ viability as well as to restore normal organ function when blood flow is restored. It is the supply line for organ transplantation. For patients with end-stage disease, organ transplantation is the most effective treatment.  In the process of transplanting an organ, the required organ is removed from the donor's body, then stored and transported. Depending on the requirements, the organ is normally washed with a preservation solution and stored according to its specific preservation needs. Providing preservation solutions and techniques is vital to donor organ quality, which directly impacts morbidity and survival after transplantation.

The most frequent cold storage solution in organ preservation is the UW solution. Originally developed for pancreatic transplantation, it has been widely used to preserve various organs, including the kidney, liver, and bowel. This intracellular preservation solution has low sodium and high potassium concentrations to mimic intracellular conditions.Celsior is a type of extracellular preservation solution used to preserve cardiac grafts in cold storage. Currently, the method is used to preserve the heart, lungs, liver, pancreas, kidneys, and small bowels. Celsior is a low-potassium, high-sodium solution. In addition to the above solutions, there are numerous other solutions used for cold storage preservation of organs. The composition of each solution may vary, but the key strategy is similar: minimize ischemic/hypoxic injury and maximize organ function after reperfusion using colloids, impermeants, electrolytes, antioxidants, and nutrients.

Clinically, delayed graft function (DGF) or primary nonfunction (PNF) occur when an organ doesn't recover quickly from implantation surgery and reperfusion. By definition, delayed graft function is impaired function that returns to normal over time. Alternatively, graft PNF indicates that the organ will not be able to function or survive. A growing number of chronic diseases and organ failures among the world's population has increased the need for organ preservation. Growing geriatric population has pushed up market demand. Smoking, drinking, and other lifestyle choices have led to the development of organ failure, as well as an increase in the need to preserve organs at the end of life.
