Overview

According to FutureWise analysis the market for antiepileptic drugs in 2023 is US$ 18.08 billion, and is expected to reach US$ 25.75 billion by 2031 at a CAGR of 4.5%.

Antiepileptic drug (AEDs), also known as anti-seizure or anticonvulsant drugs, is effective in managing epilepsy, a chronic condition affecting the central nervous system characterized by sudden and recurrent seizures. A seizure happens when there is a temporary, unstoppable surge of electrical activity in the brain. This overloads the affected areas of the brain. It may cause a diverse range of symptoms, such as abnormal sensations, loss of awareness, falling, and uncontrolled muscle movements. Antiepileptic drugs usually interact with nerve cells in the brain to reduce their activity. There are several mechanisms by which the distinct AEDs work, so each type of epilepsy answers to some AEDs but not others. The treatment of epilepsy typically is directed toward reducing the frequency of seizures. An exact diagnosis of the form of epilepsy is crucial to the selection of the drug most likely to be effective.

Many antiepileptic drugs were identified through experiments involving the prevention of seizures in lab animals, either following electrical brain stimulation or after administering convulsant substances like strychnine or pentylenetetrazol. Others, such as phenytoin, were discovered due to persistent testing of a range of drugs. It is effective in the long-term treatment of many varieties of epilepsy. It is believed to work through an interaction with sodium channels—an ion channel in the cell membrane depicted by its selectivity for sodium. The barbiturates and the benzodiazepines act as antiepileptics by improving the effectiveness of the inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA).
